Why Pavers Hold Up in Bluffdale’s Climate

Utah’s freeze-thaw cycle is hard on poured concrete. Temperatures swing from single digits in January to around 95 degrees in July, causing concrete slabs to expand and contract until they crack. Paver systems are engineered to flex with that movement. Individual units shift slightly without fracturing, and a single damaged unit can be replaced without touching the rest of the surface.

Bluffdale sits at roughly 4,400 to 5,200 feet in elevation, with soil conditions ranging from dense clay near the valley floor to sandier soils toward Traverse Ridge. That variability makes proper base preparation critical. Paver joints also allow water to drain naturally, which reduces pooling and limits freeze-thaw expansion damage. On Bluffdale’s newer lots, where raw or rough-graded conditions are common, base preparation has to be done right from the ground up.

Paver Materials & Design Options

Choosing the right paver product is one of the first real decisions in a project. Each material category performs differently and reads differently in a finished space. As a Belgard partner and ICPI-certified installer, we help clients work through these choices based on how the space will be used, how much maintenance they want to manage, and what aesthetic they’re after.

Concrete Pavers

Concrete pavers are the most common choice in the Salt Lake Valley. Belgard’s product line covers a wide range of colors, textures, and formats, and concrete pavers hold up well through Utah’s UV exposure and freeze-thaw cycles. They’re a strong fit for patios, driveways, and walkways alike.

Natural Stone

Sandstone, slate, and quartzite produce a handmade, one-of-a-kind character. Each piece is unique, and the finished surface reflects the natural variation of the material. Natural stone suits high-design applications where a manufactured look isn’t the goal.

Porcelain Pavers

Porcelain requires no sealing, resists staining, and holds a consistent finish over time. It demands more precise installation tolerances than concrete, but the long-term maintenance profile is low.

Travertine

Travertine stays cooler underfoot than concrete in direct sun, which is a meaningful advantage in pool deck applications. Its naturally porous surface requires sealing in Utah’s climate.

Pattern & Edge Design

Pattern choice affects how a space reads and how it performs. Running bond is clean and directional. Herringbone distributes load across more joint lines and is the strongest pattern for driveways. Basketweave reads best in wider open spaces. A soldier course border, a row of pavers set perpendicular to the field pattern along the perimeter, defines the edge of the paved surface and elevates the overall installation.

None of this matters without the right foundation. Proper excavation depth, compacted base layers, edge restraints, and a screeded sand bedding layer determine how a paver surface performs over time. That work happens below grade and isn’t visible after completion, which is exactly why it’s where we focus first.
